Setting Up A Wireless Router On A DSL Modem

Dsl Modem Wireless Router

You might just have bought a wireless router and you intend running it off on your DSL modem, but how exactly should you do that. Most people might just redirect you to the instructions manual but sometimes it may not exist, or it simply may not be useful enough. This article will come in handy if you are looking for a way to set up a wireless router on a DSL modem.

Well, before anything you may be interested in buying a good, quality router. A good, quality router that will really do a lot of good to your wireless connection is one that is 802.11g or even 802.11n compliant. Careful now, n routers may cost a little more but there is always the guarantee that it will work faster in long range. In other words, the router quality only depends on your pocket, but you already knew that.

What should you do with this router after you bought it? It's simple, the router will hardwire between your computer and your modem and in order to connect them you will be using a second network cable. Usually, this second network cable comes with the router, otherwise, just go to the nearest computer hardware store and buy one. After this, insert the existing modem cable into the router's modem port, and after you did this too you should insert the new cable in one of the LAN ports that exists on the router and connect it to the computer's LAN port. The first thing you have to do now, while setting up your router is to also remember to set up WPA security. WPA security will improve your wireless network's security by a lot. Do not forget the security key you will be asked to create because you will be asked to use it in a short while.

Now you will need to use an USB wireless adaptor for the computer you want to connect with. You can do this, or you can simply buy a wireless adapter card that goes in your PCI slot if your PC is a desktop PC. If the computer you want to connect is a laptop then look for a card buss adapter. I first recommended the USB adaptor because it will work great in both cases, but again, it might cost a little more.

Now, no matter which solution you chose now all you have to do is plug the adapter in, install it and then start searching for available networks. When you will see the new network simply, choose it and start setting it up with your wireless router. Now comes the moment when you should have that key we talked about available. If you find it easier to remember, right it down on a piece of paper, you might need it some other time as well. After you have selected the network the key you created above will be required when you will want to set up your router. After all this, you should be on the network and of course, have internet.
